General Note
(Georgia veterans who were living in Alabama at the time they were applying for their pensions. - Cataloger's note)
Description
Many Civil War Veterans and their widows from Georgia migrated into Alabama after the war, and eventually made application to the Alabama Bureau of Pensions. Applicants were required to apply in the county of their residence at the time of the application. The information in these applications vary, depending on the knowledge of the applicant. Widows applications sometimes lacked some information, but all have the basic information such as names, rank, company and unit. This book lists all of that, and names the Aabama county of residence at the time of the application. There are approximately 4700 applicants listed here, in alphabetical order by veteran's surname. When widows applied, her name is given as well. This book will be very beneficial to persons searching for information on their Civil War period ancestors. From this information they will know of the existance of an application for their ancestor, and be able to get a copy from the Alabama State Archives in Montgomery, AL. - Publisher's note
