Description
Sister Wendy Beckett looks at how the Catholic Church used Biblical art to counter the Protestant Reformation. Baroque Art originated in Rome and extended throughout Europe as Catholic monarchs had an important stake in the success of the Catholic Church. Sister Wendy explores Caravaggio's tenebrism, emotion and realism and contrasts that with Annibale Carracci's mythological frescos in the Farnese Gallery. She notes two pupils of the Carracci family, Guido Reni and Quercino, successful in their times, but almost forgotten. We hear the tragic story of Artemisia Gentilesci, the first great female painter and that of the outsider, El Greco. Finally, Sister Wendy explores the art of Peter Paul Rubens who she calls the King of the Baroque. A BBC Production.
