Description
After World War II, Germany was split into four sectors. The eastern part, controlled by the Soviet Union, soon fell into economic depression. In order to stop millions of East Germans from fleeing to noncommunist West Germany through the city of Berlin, the Soviet Union ordered the construction of the Berlin Wall.
